Surface Treatment Introduction

Surface treatment is a value-added final touch for heat sinks. It not only enhances thermal conductivity, duration but also gives aesthetic nuance on heat sink outlook. Zaward offers various surface treatment such as anodizing, electroplating, powder coating, polishing, and sandblasting. In this issue of newsletter, we will start with anodizing and electroplating.

– Anodizing:
Anodizing is an electrochemical process often applied to aluminum heat sinks creating durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish on metal surface. The material of anodizing oxide originates from aluminum substrate and it is fully integrated to the heat sink instead of applying to the surface like paint or plating. This is the reason why it maintains the supreme aluminum metal feature.

Advantages:
  • Increased durability and lifespan
  • Anti-corrosion and abrasion resistance
  • Exceptional metal feature enhances thermal conductivity
  • Coloring options for aesthetic outlook
  • Secondary processes possible in diamond cutting and hairline treatments.
  • Low finishing cost and ease of maintenance

Processes:

Application:

  • Metal camera shell (with diamond cutting & with hairline surface treatment)
  • Automobile accessories (with polishing)
  • LED lighting devices

– Electroplating
Electroplating is a process which is suited for all kinds of metals. Electroplating is done by passing an electric current through a solution called the” electrolyte”. The process starts with dipping two terminals called “electrodes”, which one of the electrodes is made from the metal that is to be plated and the electrolyte is a solution of a salt of the same metal. When the electricity flows through the circuit they make, the electrolyte splits up and some of the metal atoms it contains are deposited in a thin layer on top of one of the electrodes — it becomes electroplated.
The electrode that will be plated is generally made from a cheaper metal or a nonmetal coated with a conducting material such as graphite.

Advantages:
  • Decorative surface gives add-on value on metal parts
  • Prolonging product life expectancy
  • Enhancing thermal conductivity
  • Strengthening metal stability

Processes:

Application:
  • -Telecommunication device
  • -Industrial control equipment
  • -High level server system
