LED lighting heat sink

LED lighting brights up people’s life, Zaward manages thermal solution

Around 1 billion people worldwide still lack access to electricity despite light bulbs invented by Thomas Edison for almost 140 years. The UN has set a target date to achieve universal access to power of 2030. LED lightings requires much less wattage and are the most energy-efficient and longer-lasting than other light bulbs and CFL. Heat dissipation is predominant for LED lighting, which factors efficiency and lifespan. A well-designed thermal management system is vital for the longevity of your LED lighting.

LED lighting operates well in ambient environment temperature of -30 to 50c and effectively resists the intense vibration in the working environment, therefore, it’s widely adopted in automobile industry for front, rear lighting and modules.
Luminous efficacy of LED lighting is superior to other lighting sources (see chart), even though LED lighting is categorized as cold-light source, its luminous efficacy is around 30-40% hence over 50% of the electricity resulting in heat sources.

Insufficient thermal management for LED lighting may result in following conditions

  • Reduce LED’S lifespan
  • Poor reliability
  • Lower LED light illumination
  • Mechanical and component failure
  • LED lamp deformation

Thermal management for LED lighting is often categorized into passive and active cooling.

Passive cooling usually involves a heat sink without fan, which relies solely on the heat sink for heat dissipation. It derives heat through evaporation, convection, and radiation without any intermediate electrical device or driver. To optimize heat dissipations, heat pipes, interface such as Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) or improved materials will be added to passive coolers to enhance thermal resistance.

Active cooling comes with fan and heat sink. It helps reduce the dimension and weight around 70 to 80% in comparison to passive cooling. It is often applied for high power consumption around 400W above..

Factors to consider for LED heat sink selection

LED Wattage
  • Number of LEDs are running
  • Temperature of the environment and heat source
  • LEDs are mounted in an open or enclosed space.
  • Application environment (indoor or outdoor)

Zaward’s LED heatsink processes include extrusion, cold forging, die-casing, skiving, stamping and multi-process and with additional treatments such as anodizing, sandblasting, CNC grinding, painting and and various surface treatments, which make materials more resistant to corrosion, wear and fatigue. Copper and Aluminium are the commonly used materials for heatsinks, but aluminium stands out from copper as the most used material for LED heat sink thanks to light-weight and cost-effective features.

Model No. HS0058-L039
Dimension: Ø121x60mm
Thermal Wattage: 60W
Process: Stamped fins, with stocked copper soldered
Application: High bay light

Customized layers of stamped fins with drilled holes to maintain its outstanding ventilation. The unique radiation shape design carries away heat efficiently. Stamped process is a good approach for high efficiency, high ratio and lightweight heat sinks especially in small package sizes. Moreover, the stocked copper soldered structure is another highlight of this model, which rapidly absorbs the heat source and dissipates through layers of stamped aluminium fins.
