Heat Sinks for Automotive industry

FLYING CARS, WAYMO, TESLA? The automotive industry is experiencing the revolutionizing process.

Automotive industry is experiencing the revolutionizing process. Electric vehicle, autonomous driving (self-driving cars) and car-sharing are the megatrends and new innovations and business models like Waymo, Tesla’s Model 3 and Uber radically revamp the automotive industry. Its supply chain has been expanding from mechanical parts to digitalization and became a talent pool of professionals. Automotive consists of more than 30,000 parts, covering diversified industries from steel, plastic, rubber, glass, machinery, motor, electronic, service and thermal management play a vital part in enhancing efficiency in automotive components.

Heat sink processes are extensively implemented in the automotive industry, based on the requirement of thermal performance and price point. For instance, the thermal management of EV (electric vehicles) includes battery, transmission

system, engine cooling, power electronics to ventilated seats and finally waste heat recovery. For EV, battery is one of the main heat sources and processes like friction stir welding (FSW), cold plate, are the perfect fit for solving the heat issue.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

FSW is frequently adopted for EV battery, primarily in aluminium material. It is a solid-state joining process that joins two materials with pin tool, its rotating shoulder creates friction heat which softens edges of the materials to a plastic state (but not melt) and generates welding pressure itself and stirs the two pieces together. Attributes of stable products, high ratio, and complex structure, in spite of longer lead time and higher cost.

Cold Plate
Cold plate is a popular thermal solution for batteries, engine control units and power electronics. It employs heat pipe, path or tube to heat sink with flowing liquid that intelligently absorbs heat sources in a cycled process- evaporating, adiabatic transporting and condensing. This process offers supreme thermal conductivity, flexible channel design, high stability and long lifetime whilst ensuring equipment operating under proper temperature, recommended for high power consumption equipment.

Die Casting

Car stereos, transmission system, LED headlights, and battery housing is the scope die-casting heat sink covers. With die casting, heat sinks are produced in a short period of time and mass output. Lightweight, supreme surface, and near-final product shape for assembling are the best solutions for high volume, short lead time and cost-efficient orders.

Forging

Forged heat sinks (also as Cold forging) are manufactured by inserting material in the mould and pressing the material under great pressure. Forging heat sinks offer accurate dimension, strong surface and reliable structure and flexibility of a high aspect ratio for any fin type. Materials can be aluminium or copper. LED headlights, gears are the adopted applications.
