Heat pipe New Chapter

Shaping from round to flat

Working principle
Heat pipe consists of an envelope, a wick and a working fluid, which combines both thermal conductivity and phase transition to effectively transfer heat between two solid interfaces.

The heat pipe contacts the surface of heat source, the working fluid turns into vapor in the fully sealed vacuum pipe, then vapor flows along cavity to the cold interface and condenses back into the liquid and is absorbed by the wick (capillary action) to release the heat. The liquid then returns to the heat source and repeats the cycle.

Wicking structure
When it comes to heat pipe, the wicking structure plays a
significant role. Currently, there are types of structures and it has been evolving from mesh in the early stage to sinter powder, groove and composite (groove + sinter powder), the latter three are the most adopted structures nowadays. Performance-wise, composite is superior to sinter powder then follows by groove.

R-Angel -tackling the curve

Other than its splendid shiny copper surface, design flexibility is another beauty of the heat pipe. It allows various angles of curves, the “R-Angle” to meet the design requirement, however, devils are in the detail, the larger the R angle, the more efficiency loss. Below is a guideline for reference when designing the heat pipe and easy solution to tackle the “curve”.

Slim Heat Pipe
Small and compact are becoming the standards for daily life, just like a lighter mobile phone, small and powerful vacuum cleaner and pack-light laptop. Slim heat pipe can satisfy the needs in narrow and limited space with a flat surface for heat dissipation
