Aluminum Extrusion Process Part I

Aluminum Extrusion Process – the advantageous attribute of aluminum offers flexibility of complex profile, desired dimension, smooth surface finish, economical, and rapid production in wide range of uses in diverse applications.

Extrusion is a process of forcing material rod into a die mold under high temperatures, creating aluminum section material. Aluminum sectional material can be cut according to desired dimensions or for post-processes for finishing such as anodizing or painting to adjust its color, texture and brightness.

Aluminum extrusion is widely used in various ranges due to aluminum’s unique physical characteristics. It can be alloyed easily with other metals and offers strength and stability products. Extrusion process makes the best use out of aluminum alloy; it not only provides products with strength, ductility and conductivity, also its non-magnetic properties enables it to be recycled repeatedly economically. This process has been commonly applied to industry field, medical equipment, embedded system, PC cooling, LED lights and precision engineering.

Aluminum Rod

Aluminum is often alloyed with other elements such as copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon and zinc as pure Aluminum is relatively soft. Through the process of removing the impurities in aluminum alloys, the billet (ingots) is formed. Transferring the billet to a loader under substantial pressure, after melting and casting comes out the extrusion material – Aluminum rods.

Die Mold
Die mold is the significant factor for a perfect cross-section profile which is often made from tool steel, for instance, H13 Tool Steel. Solid and hollow are two types of extruded die to form various shapes and sizes. A solid profile is produced using flat or disc shaped dies. A hollow profile is produced using more than two dies, for instance, a mandrel to create the cavity and the other die to shape the outer contour of the profile.
