Server Thermal Solution 

It’s the era of big data, at least 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are produced every day in the data centres. And the server is there to help process the data. In 2019, 3M launched immersion cooling for data centres where electronic components are directly immersed in dielectric liquid in a sealed but readily accessible enclosure where heat from electronic components is transferred to the fluid.
Before we dig in deeper, what is a server? In computing, the server can be hardware or software that provides services such as sharing data or resources to clients (e.g computer, mobile phone) provides services like sharing data or resources. Typical serves are database servers, file servers, mail servers, print servers, web servers, game servers, and application servers. Said that sever is entangled and closely connected to our everyday life.

Server Dimension
When it comes to the server, we often hear 1U, 2U, etc.  In fact, the server dimension is standardized in width 48.26cm and height 4.445cm. U refers to the height of the server, 1U=4.445cm or 1.75inch and 2U= 8.89cm (4.445cmx2) or 3.5inch. 42U is the standard rack, at 19 inches.

Internal Structure
Here is an example of a 1U server layout. The fans are placed in the centre of the server to facilitate the front to back airflow for rapid heat dissipation.

Thermal Solutions
Now let’s go through these different types of thermal products, which are applied in the server equipment in our daily life. Due to various scales of data management, a suitable cooling device plays an important role here. Multiple thermal solutions are deployed in the server, we classify them as following.

BTU
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is used to measure thermal or heat energy for the server. BTU/hr is equivalent to 3.4Watts, and 12,000 BTU/hr is considered a Ton.** If a server has a heat dissipation (output) of 400 Watts the thermal or heat energy generated is 1360 BTU/hr. Bear in mind, other heat sources like lighting, monitors and other equipment must be concluded when designing server thermal solutions.
** A 1-ton window AC is an ideal choice for a room of 120-150sqft (11-14 sqm2)

DC Fan
Fan is indispensable for the server and is often in ultra-high fan speed, which may vary subject to server design. Zaward’s offers various fan series for heat dissipation.

Cooler
