LED heat sink is often categorized into passive and active cooling.
Passive cooling usually involves a heat sink without a fan, which relies solely on the heat sink for heat dissipation. It derives heat through evaporation, convection, and radiation without any intermediate electrical device or driver. To optimize heat dissipations, heat pipes, interface such as Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) or improved materials will be added to passive coolers to enhance thermal resistance.
Active cooling comes with a fan and heat sink. It helps reduce the dimension and weight by around 70 to 80% in comparison to passive cooling. It is often applied for high power consumption above 400W. Customization is possible by Zaward.
